Symbiosis Ishanya Cultural and Educational Centre (SICEC)

a) Symbiosis Ishanya Cultural and Educational Centre, Pune was launched on Friday, October 31, 2014 at the hands of Ms. Shobhana Ranade, Gandhian Social Reformist. Symbiosis has entrusted ELTIS-SIFIL with the responsibility of conducting the affairs of this new-born centre.

b) On Fri. Sept. 05, 2014, as a pre-cursor, ELTIS-SIFIL organised a colourful, musical presentation on 3 North-Eastern States- Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram under the banner ‘A Call from Ishanya’.

c) After the formal launch of SICEC, its first venture was ‘Ishanya Chitra’- The First North-East Film Festival in Pune. It was held for 3 days: Dec.05 - Dec.07, 2014. The film festival brought together eminent personalities from different walks of life. Boxing champion Ms. L. Sarita Devi and renowned Filmmaker Mr. Jahnu Barua inaugurated the festival. Other guests who graced the occasion were: Musician Ms. Sunita Khaund Bhuyan, filmmakers Bhumen Joy Konsam and Prathamesh KriSang, and renowned film and television actor Mr. Sameer Dharmadhikari. Mr. Sunil Deodhar, a social activist addressed the audience on the final day as the Chief Guest of the valedictory session. Films in dialects of Assamese, Karbi, Manipuri, Mizo, Shertukpen and many more languages were showcased from the States of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram. A total of five feature films, one animation and four documentaries were screened during the three days of the festival.

d) We also organised a meeting of the North-Eastern students with Hon. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mr. Kiren Rejiju on Sun. Dec. 14, 2014. He answered the students’ queries and advised them to concentrate on their studies and to acquire the best of qualifications. The Hon. Minister was an invitee speaker at the second International Relations Conference of Symbiosis International University (SIU).

e) We contributed to the organisation of two sports events organised by Manipuri Students Union and North-East Community Organisation Pune (NECOP) through sponsorship, in January & February 2015.

f) We are in the process of conducting a survey of the North-Eastern students studying in Pune so as to assess their needs and difficulties.

g) An interactive meeting was arranged on Wed. April 22, 2015 with Mr. Padmanabh Acharya, the Hon. Governor of Nagaland, Assam and Tripura.

h) On Fri. August 7, 2015, we arranged another session of presentation to showcase the culture, lifestyle and traditions of 3 more North-Eastern states. Titled ‘A Call from Ishanya: The Sequel’, it covered the states of Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Later this year, the third in the series will introduce Assam and Sikkim.

i) Our focus will be on warm camaraderie between the North-Eastern students and professionals, and the local population, so that the feelings of isolation and insecurity can be minimised.

j) We celebrated the first anniversary of SICEC on Sat. Oct. 31, 2015. Mr. Devasish Sharma, Dy. Resident Commissioner of Assam, Mumbai and Mr. C. B. Sahkhar, Dy. Resident Commissioner of Meghalaya, Mumbai were our honoured guests. The Chief Guest was Ms. Leena Mehendale, Former IAS Officer and Chief Information Commissioner of Goa.

k) The second edition of ‘Ishanya Chitra’ titled ‘Fragrances from the North-East’ was held on Dec. 8, 9 & 10, 2015. It was jointly organised by National Film Archive of India(NFAI), Symbiosis Ishanya Centre & NECOP. Screenings were held at NFAI as well as at Symbiosis Ishanya Centre. Together, 16 Feature Films and 9 Short Films were screened. Present for the Inaugural and Valedictory sessions, were several celebrities from the NE Film/Fashion industry such as: Mr. PranjalSaikia, Film Actor, Producer & Director, Guwahati, Mr. BidyutKotoky, Assamese Writer & Director, Mumbai, Ms. Roopa Barua, Assamese Film Producer and Director, Mumbai, Mr. Sangee Dorjee, Film Director, Arunachal Pradesh, Ms. Zarifa Wahid, Assamese Actress, Mr. Raj Zutshi (Actor from Kashmir who has worked in Assamese Films) and Ms. Gloria TepRengma , Supermodel from Nagaland. A two-day North-East food festival at NFAI and a one-day exhibition-cum-sale of North-Eastern handicrafts, apparels and accessories at Symbiosis Ishanya Centre was also organised.At NFAI, musical concerts were arranged by us on December 8 & 9 where songs and dance from the North-East were performed with great enthusiasm.

l) SICEC also conducted a blood donation camp in association with the Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Welfare Association on Sat. Feb. 13, 2016 at ELTIS-SIFIL & SICEC, Pune. Total of 84 local peoples had registered their names for blood donation.

m) On Thu. Feb. 25, 2016,‘Brothers and Neighbours:” a presentation on Sikkim and Bhutan was oraganised at ELTIS-SIFIL& SICEC Auditorium, Model Colony, Pune. Similarly we also organised ‘A call from Ishanya–Part 3’, a colourful & musical presentation on North-Eastern States of Assam & Sikkimon Mon. Feb. 29, 2016 at Symbiosis Vishwabhavan, S. B. Road, Pune. Ms. MitraPhukan, eminent Author, Translator and Columnist from Assam graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
ELTIS… one of the best language institutes in India. Excellent infrastructure and facilities, well- trained and experienced teachers and students from more than 40 countries make it a wonderful learning centre. At present, we have students from Afghanistan, Angola, Bahrain, Brazil, Burundi, China, Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Korea, Libya, Mongolia, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Tanzania, UAE & Yemen. This mini-world is a place of brotherhood and discipline. ELTIS is a centre for English training and exams of the University of Cambridge (Cambridge English Language Assessment). ELTIS gives students an opportunity to carry certificates of 2 international brands in education… Symbiosis and the University of Cambridge!
