Foreign Language - Courses

Symbiosis Institute of Foreign and Indian Languages (SIFIL) regularly conducts courses for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French and Spanish.

Can-do statements have been given at the end of this page. They will give you a summary of what students are expected to learn if they successfully complete the courses.

Course duration: Each level is of 90 clock hours.

Can-do statements for Foreign languages levels-1 & 2

Level 1

Can do statements have been classified into four sections mainly listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening
Can understand basic telephonic conversation & apply words, basic information, instructions and simple sentences. Speaking
Following is covered - introduction – self and others, greeting phrases, class room interaction, individual description, appointment scheduling, expression of likes, dislikes, regrets, situational interaction, workplace description and basic statistical data


Can read and understand international words, numbers, maps and different type of texts with medium difficulty level and solve questions based on that.


Can write simple informal messages, brief messages like postcards, information about oneself, fill in a questionnaire with personal details, can write simple description of everyday objects and can label diagrams and charts.

All functions performed at basic level.

Level 2


Can understand instructions and announcements at public places, recorded messages, and situational telephonic conversation


following is covered – description of one’s life, family, surroundings, situational interaction such as shopping, description of past events,


Can read and understand text containing complex sentences, statistical data, short emails and letters, advertisements, brochures etc.


Can write very simple emails, post cards, description of past event, Can write basic resume.


In-house Exams


The award of certificates is subject to:

  1. Minimum 85 % attendance.

  2. Performance in all the evaluations

  3. Individual passing in oral and written evaluation (min 60%).

  4. Two internal tests and one final exam are mandatory.


  1. A minimum of 85% attendance is mandatory to appear for the final exam.

  2. Less than 85% attendance will result in deduction of marks due to shortage of attendance, if the Director decides to allow such an exception. However, the bottomline is 75%.

  3. Coming late by more than 15 minutes will be considered as absence.

  4. Submitting an application to the Co-ordinators, does not mean that the leave is sanctioned.

Evaluation process

  1. Two internal tests of 20 and 40 marks each will be conducted on the completion of 30 hours and 60 hours respectively. An average of the two tests will be taken for final results.

  2. A final exam of 80 marks will be conducted upon completion of the course.

  3. This final exam will be 50 % written and 50 % oral.
    * Dictation and Listening will not be considered in speaking evaluation.
